What it asks first

Command line
Command: BLOCK
Enter block name or [?]:

Read from Musa CAD 0.8.0 itself (musacad --dump-wiki-data), so these facts always match the release this wiki is built for (0.8.0).

BLOCK turns a group of objects into a block: a named, reusable symbol such as a door, a bolt or a title block. Once a block exists, you can place copies of it anywhere with INSERT. Each copy is a single object, and changing the block’s definition changes every copy.

Type B and press Enter. Give the block a name, click its base point, then select the objects and press Enter.

Command line
Command: B
Enter block name or [?]: HOUSE
Specify insertion base point: (click the lower-left corner)
Select objects: (pick the objects) Enter
Block "HOUSE" defined with 3 objects.

The selected objects are taken into the block, and one block reference takes their place, exactly where they were. That reference is left selected. The drawing looks the same, but the objects now move, copy and erase as one.

The base point is the point of the block that lands on the spot you click when you insert it later. A corner or a centre is usually the easiest to place.

OptionWhat it does
?At the name prompt, lists the blocks in the drawing, such as Blocks: "DOOR" "HOUSE", or says No blocks defined.
ALLAt Select objects, selects every object.
Enter at Select objectsMakes the block from what is selected. If you selected objects before starting BLOCK, they are still selected, so Enter uses them.

At Select objects you can click objects one by one or drag a window around them, as at any selection prompt.

Lines, circles, arcs, polylines, text, multiline text, other blocks and attribute definitions can go into a block. An attribute definition made with ATTDEF becomes an attribute: INSERT asks for its value each time.

Points, ellipses, splines, hatches, dimensions, leaders, multileaders, tables, images, construction lines, multilines and geometric tolerances cannot go into a block yet. If your selection has some, they stay in the drawing as they are, and the message adds how many, such as (2 unsupported left in place).

  • With no name, Musa CAD says A block name is required. and asks again.
  • With nothing selected when you press Enter, Musa CAD says Nothing selected. and the command ends.
  • If none of the selected objects can go into a block, Musa CAD says Block: none of the selected objects can go into a block yet (lines, circles, arcs, polylines, text, mtext and inserts can).
  • A name that is already a block is redefined without asking first: Musa CAD says Block "HOUSE" redefined with 3 objects., and every copy of that block in the drawing changes to the new objects.
  • Block names are case-sensitive: HOUSE and house are two different blocks.
  • The block takes the drawing’s units. When it is inserted into a drawing in other units, it is scaled to match.
  • -BLOCK is the same command.

In Musa CAD, BLOCK and -BLOCK are the same command and both ask at the command line. The selected objects are always replaced by a block reference in place, and a name already in use is redefined without asking. Some kinds of object, such as hatches and dimensions, cannot go into a block yet.

  • Place copies of the block with INSERT.
  • Change a block’s objects with BEDIT, or save it as a drawing file of its own with WBLOCK.
  • Add text that changes from copy to copy with ATTDEF.
