Musa CAD will not start

CompleteChecked against Musa CAD 0.8.0Verified
Who this affects
Computers with old graphics drivers, virtual machines without 3D acceleration, Macs, and some Linux systems running the AppImage.
Why it happens
The drawing area needs OpenGL 4.5. If the system offers less, Musa CAD explains this and closes. AppImages also need FUSE, which some systems lack.

Musa CAD shows a message like this and then closes:

Musa CAD's viewport needs OpenGL 4.5 Core (it draws through direct state access
and persistently mapped buffers), and this system provides OpenGL 3.3 (llvmpipe).

The numbers and the name in brackets are what your computer offered. They tell you what to fix:

  • An old version number with your graphics card’s name. Update your graphics driver. Current drivers for Intel, AMD and NVIDIA graphics on Windows and Linux all support OpenGL 4.5.
  • llvmpipe, softpipe or Microsoft Basic Render Driver. No graphics driver is in use, and the computer is drawing in software. Install your graphics card’s driver.
  • A virtual machine. Turn on 3D acceleration in the virtual machine’s display settings, and install its guest additions or tools.
  • A Mac. macOS stops at OpenGL 4.1, so no update can help. The Mac version is a preview for this reason. See Install on macOS.

Checking and plotting drawings does not need the drawing area. These work on any computer:

Terminal window
musacad --check drawing.musa
musacad --plot drawing.musa drawing.pdf --paper A4

See The command line.

First make sure the file can run:

Terminal window
chmod +x MusaCAD-0.8.0-x86_64.AppImage
./MusaCAD-0.8.0-x86_64.AppImage

If it says something about FUSE, your system does not have the library AppImages normally use. You can install it: on Ubuntu 22.04 and later, the package is libfuse2. Or you can tell the AppImage to unpack itself and run without FUSE:

Terminal window
APPIMAGE_EXTRACT_AND_RUN=1 ./MusaCAD-0.8.0-x86_64.AppImage

The Flathub version avoids this completely.

Start Musa CAD from a terminal, so you can see what it prints. On Linux run flatpak run org.musacad.MusaCAD, or the AppImage file. On Windows run musacad.exe from the install folder in a command prompt.

A line starting [musacad_ui] GL renderer: shows which graphics driver it found. Include everything it printed when you report the problem.

If Musa CAD starts but drawing is slow or the drawing area stays black, see The drawing area is black, blank or slow.
