DIMSTYLE
Create and change dimension styles: text, arrows, units and colours, and the current style.
- Type
- DIMSTYLE or D or DST or DDIM
- On the ribbon
- Home › Annotation (slide-out) › Dimension Style
- Annotate › Dimensions (slide-out) › Dimension Style
- What it does first
- It opens the Dimension Style Manager window.
- Also
- A system variable:
SETVAR DIMSTYLEsets it too. - Since
- Musa CAD 0.6.0
Read from Musa CAD 0.8.0 itself (musacad --dump-wiki-data), so these facts always match the release this wiki is built for (0.8.0).
DIMSTYLE opens the Dimension Style Manager. A dimension style is a named set of choices for how dimensions look: the text height, the arrowheads, the colours, and how the numbers are written. Every dimension uses a style. Change the style, and every dimension that uses it changes with it.
How it works
Section titled “How it works”Type D and press Enter (DST and DDIM work too). The Dimension Style Manager opens and the command ends. Pick a style in the list, then use the buttons on the right. When you are done, click Close.
Command: D(select Standard, click New..., type Mechanical and click OK)(on the Text tab set Text height to 3.5, then click OK)Dimension style "Mechanical" added.(click Set Current)"Mechanical" is now the current dimension style.Every drawing has a style called Standard. New dimensions are drawn in the current style. To work with styles at the command line instead, for example in a script, use -DIMSTYLE.
The Dimension Style Manager
Section titled “The Dimension Style Manager”| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Current dimension style: | The line at the top names the current style. |
| Styles | The drawing’s dimension styles. The current one is in bold. Double-click a style to modify it, or right-click it for Set Current, Modify…, Rename… and Delete. |
| List: | All styles, or Styles in use: the styles that dimensions, leaders or tolerance frames use, plus Standard and the current style. |
| Preview of: | A sample part dimensioned in the selected style, with a linear, an aligned, an angular and a radius dimension. It is drawn the same way the drawing draws dimensions. |
| Description | A few lines about the selected style: its text height, its arrowheads, how its numbers read, and where moved text goes. |
| Set Current | Makes the selected style current. Musa CAD says "Mechanical" is now the current dimension style. with that style’s name. |
| New… | Makes a new style, starting as a copy of the selected one. Type a name in Create New Dimension Style (it suggests Copy of and the selected name), click OK, then set the style up in the editor. |
| Modify… | Opens the selected style in the editor. When you click OK, every dimension in that style changes at once. |
| Rename… | Gives the selected style a new name. Standard cannot be renamed. |
| Delete | Deletes the selected style after you confirm. Standard, the current style and a style in use cannot be deleted; hold the cursor over the button to see why. |
| Close | Closes the manager. |
The style editor
Section titled “The style editor”New… and Modify… open the style editor, titled New Dimension Style: or Modify Dimension Style: and the style’s name. Its settings are on seven tabs. The Preview beside them changes as you change a setting. Click OK to keep your changes or Cancel to drop them.
Every colour list offers ByLayer (the colour of the dimension’s layer), seven named colours, and Select Colour… to choose any colour.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Dimension lines > Colour: | The colour of the dimension line. |
| Dimension lines > Lineweight: | How thick the dimension and extension lines are, from the standard list. |
| Extension lines > Colour: | The colour of the extension lines. |
| Extend beyond dim lines: | How far the extension lines run past the dimension line. |
| Offset from origin: | The small gap between the point measured and the start of the extension line. |
Symbols and Arrows
Section titled “Symbols and Arrows”| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Arrowheads: | Closed filled, Architectural tick, Open or Dot. Leaders and multileaders drawn in this style use these arrowheads too. |
| Arrow size: | How big the arrowheads are. |
| Colour: | The colour of the arrowheads. |
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Text height: | How tall the dimension text is. |
| Text colour: | The colour of the text. |
| Vertical: | Where the text sits against the dimension line: Centered, Above, Outside, JIS or Below. |
| Horizontal: | Where the text sits along a linear or aligned dimension: Centered, At Ext Line 1, At Ext Line 2, Over Ext Line 1 or Over Ext Line 2. |
| View Direction: | Left-to-Right, or Right-to-Left to read the text the other way. |
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Fit options | When the text does not fit between the extension lines: Move the text outside (best fit), Always keep the text between the extension lines, or Always place the text outside. |
| Text placement | When the text is moved from its place, for example by dragging its grip: Beside the dimension line (the line moves with it), Over the dimension line, with a leader, or Over the dimension line, without a leader. |
Primary Units
Section titled “Primary Units”| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Unit format: | Scientific, Decimal, Engineering, Architectural or Fractional. |
| Precision: | How many decimal places, or how fine a fraction. The list shows each choice as the numbers will read, such as 0.00. |
| Fraction format: | Horizontal, Diagonal or Not stacked. |
| Decimal separator: | ’.’ (Period) or ’,’ (Comma). |
| Round off: | Rounds every length to a multiple of this. 0 means no rounding. |
| Prefix: and Suffix: | Text written before and after the value, such as a unit. On a radius or diameter dimension, a prefix takes the place of the R or the diameter sign. |
| Measurement scale factor: | Every measured length is multiplied by this before it is written. |
| Zero suppression | Tick Leading (0.50 reads .50) or Trailing (12.50 reads 12.5) to leave out those zeros. For feet and inches, 0 feet (0’-6” reads 6”) and 0 inches (1’-0” reads 1’) do the same. |
| Angular dimensions > Units format: | Decimal Degrees, Degrees Minutes Seconds, Gradians or Radians. |
| Angular dimensions > Precision: | As linear, or a number of decimal places for angles. |
Alternate Units
Section titled “Alternate Units”| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Display alternate units | Writes each length a second time, in other units, in brackets. |
| Unit format:, Precision: | The format and the decimal places of the second value. |
| Multiplier for alt units: | The length is multiplied by this for the second value. The Standard style has 25.4, which turns inches into millimetres. |
| Round distances to: | Rounds the second value to a multiple of this. |
| Prefix: and Suffix: | Text before and after the second value. |
| Placement: | After primary value or Below primary value. |
Tolerances
Section titled “Tolerances”| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Method: | None, Symmetrical (the value ± one amount), Deviation (a plus and a minus amount beside the value), Limits (the largest and smallest sizes) or Basic (the value in a box). It applies to every dimension in the style that has no tolerance of its own. |
| Precision: | As the primary units, or a number of decimal places. |
| Upper value: and Lower value: | The tolerance amounts. |
| Scaling for height: | How tall the tolerance text is compared with the value. |
Settings that a method does not use are greyed out.
Related system variables
Section titled “Related system variables”Each of these sets one value of the current style at the command line, which is handy in scripts. For example, DIMTXT asks Enter new value for DIMTXT <2.5000>: in the Standard style.
| Variable | Setting |
|---|---|
| DIMTXT, DIMCLRT | Text height, text colour |
| DIMASZ, DIMBLK | Arrow size, arrowheads |
| DIMCLRD, DIMCLRE, DIMLWD | Dimension line colour (arrowheads follow it), extension line colour, lineweight |
| DIMEXE, DIMEXO | Extend beyond dim lines, offset from origin |
| DIMTAD, DIMJUST, DIMTXTDIRECTION | Vertical, horizontal, view direction |
| DIMATFIT, DIMTMOVE | Fit options, text placement |
| DIMLUNIT, DIMDEC, DIMFRAC, DIMDSEP | Unit format, precision, fraction format, decimal separator |
| DIMRND, DIMLFAC, DIMZIN | Round off, measurement scale factor, zero suppression |
| DIMAUNIT, DIMADEC | Angle format and its precision |
| DIMALT, DIMALTU, DIMALTD, DIMALTF, DIMALTRND | Alternate units: on or off, format, precision, multiplier, rounding |
| DIMTFAC | Tolerance scaling for height |
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- Standard is always there. It cannot be renamed or deleted.
- A new style starts as a copy of the style selected when you click New…, so select the closest one first.
- A new style’s name cannot contain
<,>,/,\,",:,;,?,*,|,,,=or a backquote (`). Musa CAD saysA style name cannot containand the character. A name already in use is refused withThere is already a style calledand the name. - Changes to styles are not undo steps: U does not take them back. Use Modify… again to change a style back.
- Styles are saved with the drawing.
- To give a few dimensions their own values without changing the style, use DIMOVERRIDE.
Compared with AutoCAD
Section titled “Compared with AutoCAD”The Dimension Style Manager is laid out as AutoCAD’s, and the editor has the same tabs. One difference: a dimension variable typed at the command line, such as DIMTXT, changes the current style itself. AutoCAD keeps such a change as an override of the style.
- Draw dimensions in the current style with DIMLINEAR or DIM.
- Set the style of multileaders with MLEADERSTYLE.
- Read about dimensions and notes in Annotation.
